A view of the mouth of the Hunter River, from the cycle-way at Nobby's Head, Newcastle, NSW.
Cycling down the back-streets of inner-city Newcastle, we couldn't resist this peek into classic Novocastrian domestic life: the Hills Hoist with a blooming crop of fereshly laundered blue work-shirts.
Walking down Macquarie St Sydney, on the way to see the Jitterbug Photo Exhibition at the State Library, we looked upwards at the Architecture - gargoyles and all - of the British Medical Association building.
The State Library of NSW hosted an exhibition of photographs by George Caddy, an amateur photographer, champion Jitterbug dancer and Bondi local. His distinctive photographs document Bondi Beach during the late 1930s and early 1940s and feature parading lifesavers, leisure seekers wearing the latest beach fashions and the astonishing gymnastic feats known as ‘beachobatics’. Show runs from 29 November 2008 – 22 February 2009.
I was entranced, on a recent visit to see an exhibition of photos by Bondi Jitterbug George Caddy from the 1940's era, by the design features of both the modern and ancient aspects of the State Library. I managed to snap this pic of the reading chairs and the Dewey Decimal Card files before the Library Nazi came and hissed at me... I wasn't using flash, nor being noisy or obnoxious, or taking pictures of other guests - but I guess they haff RULEZ!
Remember this?? The card-board file system for finding out were books might be stored on the shelves in a Library... I didn't know these still existed, since the advent of Google. Nice to know an archaeological site like this has been preserved. State Library of NSW. Sydney Australia.
